Do to-do lists need streaks and statistics?
Many apps count how busy you’ve been: tasks completed, days in a row, charts. Heute counts none of it. Why a list doesn’t need to judge you in order to help.
Many apps want to know how good you are. How many tasks you completed this week. How many days in a row. Whether the chart is pointing up. Some hand out points, badges or little flames that go out if you skip a day.
Heute counts none of it. No streaks, no statistics, no report at the end of the month. That is not a missing feature but a decision.
What numbers do to a list
As soon as something is counted, what you use the list for changes. You write down things that are quick to tick off. You split tasks into small pieces so the number grows. You tick off one more thing in the evening so the streak doesn’t break.
The list is meant to help you shape your day. With a counter next to it, it becomes something you have to keep fed.
A streak is a threat
A streak does not reward the day you get something done. It punishes the day you don’t. After thirty days in a row, the thirty-first is no longer an ordinary day but one on which you can lose something.
But there are days with nothing on the list. Because you are ill, on holiday, or simply don’t need a plan. Those days are not failures. In Heute they are simply blank sheets.
More done doesn’t mean better
Statistics treat all tasks the same. “Take out the rubbish” counts as much as “call Mum” or “send off the application”. Watching the number teaches you that ten small things are better than one important one.
But a good day is not the one with the most ticks. It is the one on which you did what you set out to do. Sometimes that is a single thing.
What remains instead
When you tick something off in Heute, the box fills and the entry fades. It is not crossed out and not counted away. It stays in its place, quietly, like on a sheet of paper.
In the evening you see your list: what is done and what stayed open. That is all it takes to know how your day went. And tomorrow a new sheet begins, with no backlog and no record to keep up.
Mindful does not mean more productive. It means you decide what counts.
